Long Service Award - Richard Knowles

A Long Service Award was presented at Saddleworth School Governors' Meeting on 19th June 2014 by Karen Holmes (Oldham Council) to Dr Richard Knowles in recognition of a total of 71 years distinguished service as a School Governor in the Borough.

Karen Holmes commended him for distinguished service at Saddleworth Secondary School (31 years to date), Diggle Primary School (19 years), Friezland Primary School (10 years) and at St Hilda�s Primary, Kaskenmoor Secondary and Oldham College.

Richard Knowles in reply said that he was a passionate believer in state education and had made a lifelong commitment to it both as a Governor and in his work in Higher Education for the last 43 years. Both of his children had benefitted from being educated at Saddleworth. He had particularly enjoyed the challenge of being Chair of Governors at Saddleworth, Diggle and Friezland schools. At Saddleworth he had worked with four headteachers (Mr Cook, Mr Hodgkinson, Mrs Cornish and Matthew Milburn). He was excited at the opportunities for children�s education that will be provided by the new �17 million Saddleworth School after so many years of campaigning for a new school.
